Turn a Candle into a Must-Have Outdoor Tool

There is a lot more going on with the VSSL Beeswax Candle than you might realize. We'll get to that. But first we wanted to go over some of the uses for a candle that you might not have considered.

We recently had a power outage due to a snowstorm up here in Canada. And that's when a bunch of candles can really come in handy!

But in the woods, in addition to providing some campground lighting and ambience, there are a few other useful things your candle can do.
 

1.Warmth

Heat is obviously one of them. A candle gives off a surprising amount of heat. When your fingers are too cold to work your zipper, or tie a knot, light a candle and warm them up. A single good candle can heat up a snow cave by about 4 degrees. And when you're freezing that could be the difference between life and death.
 

2. Rust Prevention

Wax has been used to preserve materials for thousands of years. And still today it’s a good solution for rust and corrosion prevention. Try applying it to your favorite knife to keep the blade rust-free.

 

3. Waterproofing

Another not so common use for beeswax is waterproofing your gear. I know some people waterproof their boots with it. It can also be used as a quick repair for a rip in a tent, or in this case to patch a rip on a jacket. It's simple. Just drip some wax over the tear. This patch will at least last until I finish my trip, if not longer.

A Pure, Long Burn

Our candles are 100% pure Canadian beeswax. Unlike most synthetic or paraffin candles, beeswax doesn't give off harmful residue. Not only that, beeswax takes A LOT longer to burn. Our small tin candle will burn for about 4hrs whereas a non-beeswax candle of the same size might last for 20 mins.

We source our candles from Saskatchewan. Our bee farmers stopped in on their way through town to visit us and see our shop. I had no idea that they use the money from our candles to send special needs kids to summer camp! We also employ special needs kids, so I was incredibly touched by this. We'll never buy candles based solely on price. Some things you can't put a price tag on.
